Abstract

Lesser Noddy Anous tenuirostris is a little-known species in the Indian sub-continent. Until now, it was only known as a non-breeding visitor to the coasts and islands of the region. Byju et al. in 2025 report a breeding record of Brown Noddy A. stolidus, which is a mis-identified Lesser Noddy. Plumage characteristics of the head and bill structure clearly distinguished the birds reported in Byju et al. as Lesser Noddy and this observation is the first confirmed breeding record of the species in the Indian subcontinent. Lesser Noddy, added to the list of breeding birds in the Adam’s Bridge Island, further reflects the importance for the conservation of this sensitive habitat, and its birdlife as an important bird area.
