Small sized freshwater fishes that prefer specialized aquatic habitats tend to be overlooked in most ichthyofaunal surveys. This is evident from sporadic collections that identify species of fish that were not previously known from the region or locality. In this paper the discovery of Puntius gelius from Chennai is reported. P. gelius interstingly is a species that is popular amongst hobbyists in the western world. Its occurrence in Chennai and further south in Cuddalore extends its geographical range southward by more than 800kms.Published
