{"id":1510,"date":"2019-07-22T05:04:23","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T05:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/?p=1510"},"modified":"2019-07-22T05:04:27","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T05:04:27","slug":"beyond-spots-and-stripes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/ecology\/beyond-spots-and-stripes\/","title":{"rendered":"Beyond spots and stripes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dampa Tiger Reserve has more to boast about than the striped cats it is named after\u2014it indeed has a green thumb!<\/p>\n<h2>Rare finds<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Dampa Tiger Reserve in northeastern India is part of the Indo-Burman Biodiversity Hotspot.&nbsp; It is also the largest wildlife sanctuary in the state of Mizoram.&nbsp; The reserve is famed for the thriving populations of its big wild cats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">In April 2014, researchers collecting data on wild cats encountered two interesting plant species in the reserve.&nbsp; Further surveys and literature searches revealed that the spotted species were, in fact, incredibly rare floral gingers, <em>Globba&nbsp;spathulata<\/em> and <em>Hemiorchis&nbsp;pantlingii<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2>Spice of life<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1524\" style=\"width: 239px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1524\" class=\"wp-image-1524 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3797-Image-17997-1-17-20180426-3-229x300.png\" alt=\"Globba spathulata \" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3797-Image-17997-1-17-20180426-3-229x300.png 229w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3797-Image-17997-1-17-20180426-3.png 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 100vw, 229px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1524\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Globba spathulata in Dampa Tiger Reserve.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The ginger family consists of important tropical herbs used in medicine, food, and perfumes and as ornamental plants.&nbsp; Around 200 species of the family are known from India.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Both species sighted in Dampa are restricted to northeastern India and the adjoining regions of Bangladesh, Myanmar, and northern Thailand.&nbsp; Existing information on the gingers suggests that there are less than 20 mature individuals of each species in the wild.&nbsp; This qualifies both herbs as Vulnerable according to the IUCN Red List.&nbsp; This data, however, could be an outcome of limited survey effort. The species are indeed extremely hard to locate in the wild\u2014after the flowering season, both species survive underground as rhizomes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1525\" style=\"width: 237px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1525\" class=\"wp-image-1525 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3797-Image-17998-1-17-20180426-2-227x300.png\" alt=\"Hemiorchis pantlingii\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3797-Image-17998-1-17-20180426-2-227x300.png 227w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/3797-Image-17998-1-17-20180426-2.png 281w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hemiorchis pantlingii in Dampa Tiger Reserve.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The newly-discovered populations of both gingers are relatively secure by virtue of their location within a protected area.&nbsp; There are, however, other threats lurking the background\u2014conversion of land to oil-palm monocultures and controlled burning could sweep the populations to the brink of untimely local extinction.<\/p>\n<h2>Invisible species<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The case from Dampa is yet another example of the plight of the less glamorous species on the planet.&nbsp; The lion\u2019s share of conservation attention and funding is usually dedicated to the rescue of charismatic species worldwide.&nbsp; This worrisome trend assumes that a single species can be saved in isolation just as it ignores the immediate conservation needs of a wide variety of other equally important and often threatened species in the wild.&nbsp; The study also points to a serious lack of scientific inventorying in the reserve, despite its ecological significance and vast forest cover.<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 138px\" width=\"670\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u25ba The small network of protected areas in Mizoram urgently requires biodiversity inventorying.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u25ba With large areas being converted to oil-palm monocultures, it is important to extend the coverage of protection within the state.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u25ba Habitat management practices in protected areas should not compromise the survival of rare native floral species.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Reference<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Kumar, P. &amp; P.
