{"id":1371,"date":"2019-01-17T01:13:01","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T01:13:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/?p=1371"},"modified":"2019-01-18T03:55:22","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T03:55:22","slug":"a-highly-threatened-plant-is-living-on-the-edge-in-russia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/ecology\/a-highly-threatened-plant-is-living-on-the-edge-in-russia\/","title":{"rendered":"A highly threatened plant is living on the edge in Russia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A researcher studying a vulnerable plant species in Russia was in for a welcome surprise when he encountered its northernmost population in the country.<\/p>\n<h2>Pushing the boundaries<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1381\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1381\" class=\"wp-image-1381 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3476-Image-16687-1-17-20180126-1-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Pepper Saxifrage at the northern limits of its range in Mordovia. \" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3476-Image-16687-1-17-20180126-1-300x180.jpg 300w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3476-Image-16687-1-17-20180126-1-768x460.jpg 768w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3476-Image-16687-1-17-20180126-1-1024x613.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/3476-Image-16687-1-17-20180126-1.jpg 1950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pepper Saxifrage in Mordovia, Russia.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The sole member of its genus, Pepper Saxifrage <em>Silaum silaus<\/em>&nbsp;has a known distribution from the Iberian Peninsula in the southwest to western Siberia in the east.&nbsp; Adorned with aromatic, yellow flower clusters, this perennial plant stands 40\u2013100 cm tall and prefers sub-arid conditions within its native range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Russia, where Pepper Saxifrage is considered Critically Endangered, one of the northernmost native populations of the species was recorded near Khadzhi Village in the Republic of Mordovia in 2002.&nbsp; At that time, dense populations of the species occupied the floodplain meadows of the region for around 800 sq. m.&nbsp; The population at the brinks remained forgotten for 15 years until 2016 when a researcher conducted a study in the area to reveal its current status with respect to its central population.<\/p>\n<h2>Surviving the extremes<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the past 15 years, the vegetation cover in Mordovia had significantly succumbed to&nbsp;grazing pressure, which was extremely intense until recently.&nbsp; This environmental crisis, however, did not seem to have limited the vitality of the Pepper Saxifrage population in the region.&nbsp; Not only had the species thrived against all odds,&nbsp;but also increased the area it occupied by more than 12 fold since its last record in 2002!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The studied peripheral population also had higher numbers of seeds, though with lower seed mass, as compared to its siblings in the core populations.&nbsp; These character modifications may represent adaptations to the extreme grazing pressure at the locality.&nbsp; The large numbers of small, light seeds may have aided easier dispersal by the livestock, which could have been a reason driving the expansion of the population in the region.&nbsp; This information is crucial in understanding the evolution of the species within its native range.<\/p>\n<table style=\"height: 138px;\" width=\"670\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u25ba Studies are needed to understand the lower seed mass of the peripheral population of Pepper Saxifrage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u25ba Germination ecology studies are needed to understand the environment preferences of the seeds of the species.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u25ba Population studies are needed in the saline steppes of the closely located territories where the species occurs in high abundance.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Reference<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Khapugin, A.
