world&#8217;s second largest lizard mapped in Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The much-debated issue of the distribution of Water Monitors in northern Myanmar seems to have been resolved with the advent of new photographic evidence from the northwestern parts of the country.<\/p>\n<h2>Forked records<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Water Monitor is one of the most common and widely distributed <span id=\"su_tooltip_69f158c9a894a_button\" class=\"su-tooltip-button su-tooltip-button-outline-yes\" aria-describedby=\"su_tooltip_69f158c9a894a\" data-settings='{\"position\":\"bottom\",\"behavior\":\"hover\",\"hideDelay\":0}' tabindex=\"0\"><span style=\"color: #a12e55;\">varanids<\/span><\/span><span style=\"display:none;z-index:100\" id=\"su_tooltip_69f158c9a894a\" class=\"su-tooltip\" role=\"tooltip\"><span class=\"su-tooltip-inner su-tooltip-shadow-yes\" style=\"z-index:100;background:#FFFFFF;color:#333333;font-size:16px;border-radius:5px;text-align:left;max-width:300px;line-height:1.25\"><span class=\"su-tooltip-title\"><\/span><span class=\"su-tooltip-content su-u-trim\">Lizards belonging to the family Varanidae, most members of which are carnivorous.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"su_tooltip_69f158c9a894a_arrow\" class=\"su-tooltip-arrow\" style=\"z-index:100;background:#FFFFFF\" data-popper-arrow><\/span><\/span> in southern and southeastern Asia.\u00a0 Though known to be plentiful throughout Myanmar, the specific\u00a0localities of the species in the country&#8217;s central and northern regions are little known.\u00a0 The past records of the species from the areas were held to be in error, representing specimens obtained in markets or transported as food.\u00a0 This assumption was supported when a research team failed to record\u00a0the species\u00a0from the areas.\u00a0\u00a0More recently, however, the occurrence of the species was confirmed in north-central Myanmar after a large adult was photographed and locally-collected specimens were found being offered for sale at a market.\u00a0 These records were taken to represent either an isolated, relict occurrence or the extended range of the giant lizard.<\/p>\n<h2>Burrowing evidence<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1237\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/M7YGL3FdLgE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1237\" class=\"wp-image-1237 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/wm2-1-300x144.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/wm2-1-300x144.png 300w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/wm2-1.png 470w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Juvenile Water Monitor basking on a log<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The issue was provided further resolution when a research team obtained two additional photo records of Water Monitors from Sagaing Region within northwestern Myanmar.\u00a0\u00a0In April 2016, a juvenile was photographed\u00a0basking on a log over-hanging the Nam Pi Lin Stream from a boat.\u00a0 The Monitor dropped into the water as the boat approached, a typical behaviour exhibited by the lizard when threatened.\u00a0\u00a0Again, in March 2018, a large adult was captured on a game camera deployed along the Chindwin River beside the decaying carcass of a domestic buffalo in a seasonal swamp.\u00a0 The images showed the brownish carnivore striking a pose usually exhibited when swallowing, investigating the pile of bones in the fetid muck, and moving across and away from the camera.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1238\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1238\" class=\"wp-image-1238 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/wm3-1-296x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/wm3-1-296x300.png 296w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/wm3-1.png 471w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adult Water Monitor next to the decaying carcass of a buffalo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These field records extend\u00a0the known geographic range of the Water Monitor approximately 170km northwards and westwards of the records from north-central Myanmar.\u00a0 Collectively, the records from the region strongly suggest that the distribution of\u00a0the species extends to northern and northwestern Myanmar, given the lack of apparent geographic barriers.\u00a0\u00a0There seems to be no reason to assume that these records represent an isolated, relict occurrence of\u00a0the species\u00a0in the area.\u00a0 Additional investigation, however, will be required to resolve these\u00a0biogeographical\u00a0questions.<\/p>\n<h2>Reference<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Platt, S.G.,\u00a0M.M.
