{"id":1192,"date":"2018-11-24T06:20:03","date_gmt":"2018-11-24T06:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/?p=1192"},"modified":"2018-11-24T07:31:42","modified_gmt":"2018-11-24T07:31:42","slug":"the-outlying-forest-dwellers-new-bat-subspecies-found-in-andaman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/taxonomy\/the-outlying-forest-dwellers-new-bat-subspecies-found-in-andaman\/","title":{"rendered":"The outlying forest-dwellers: new bat subspecies found in Andaman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A new subspecies of the Malayan Bamboo Bat has been discovered in Andaman, India.\u00a0 This is the first specimen-based record of this species from the island.<\/p>\n<h2>Batty findings<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_1199\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1199\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1199\" src=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/3906-Image-16764-1-17-20180126-1-300x288.jpg\" alt=\"New species of Malayan Bamboo Bat\" width=\"300\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/3906-Image-16764-1-17-20180126-1-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/3906-Image-16764-1-17-20180126-1-768x736.jpg 768w, https:\/\/threatenedtaxa.org\/jottings\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/3906-Image-16764-1-17-20180126-1.jpg 948w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The newly described Malayan Bamboo Bat subspecies from North Andaman Island.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In November 2015, while surveying the North Andaman Island to study its bat\u00a0diversity, a group of scientists from the Indo-UK bat survey and conservation project spotted two unusual male bamboo bats.\u00a0 The tiny bats stood out with their flat heads that projected forwards and downwards,\u00a0 triangular ears with rounded tips, and club-shaped feet.<\/p>\n<h2>New echoes<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Detailed analyses revealed the bats to be\u00a0Malayan Bamboo Bats, which have a known distribution from northeastern India across mainland southeastern Asia.\u00a0 Their features, however, considerably differed from the mainland forms in size and colour, suggesting that the islanders may have diversified in isolation.\u00a0 The scientists were thus prompted to qualify the discovered specimens under a new subspecies named <em>Tylonycteris malayana eremtaga<\/em>, where \u2018<em>eremtaga<\/em>\u2019 is derived from a dialect of the Great Andamanese language, meaning \u2018forest-dweller\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bamboo bats are unique night-fliers that depend on bamboos for their sustenance.\u00a0 Harvesting of bamboo for commercial purposes, destruction of bamboo forests, forest fires, and increased use of pesticides in fringe villages might thus have a negative impact on the survival of the species.\u00a0 The newly described subspecies was found to share its habitat with other bat species\u00a0and is currently known only from Chipo Village in North Andaman Island.\u00a0\u00a0The presence of multiple males in the area suggests the existence of a colony of these bats in the near vicinity of the village.<\/p>\n<h2>Reference<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Srinivasulu, C., A.
