Tracking trends<\/h2>\n

Although most urban wetlands in India\u00a0are considered to be extremely polluted, they still attract a large number of winged visitors for food, rest, and shelter.\u00a0 A group of citizen scientists took to birding<\/span><\/span><\/span>The observation of birds in their natural habitats as a hobby.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> in\u00a0Perur Lake, a wetland complex in metropolitan Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, to assess the composition and status of its waterbirds<\/span><\/span><\/span>Birds that live on or around water.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> from May 2014 to April 2016.<\/p>\n

The systematic monthly count indicated that Perur Lake sustained resident<\/span><\/span><\/span>A species that stays and breeds in the area throughout the year or most of the year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\/local migrant<\/span><\/span><\/span>A species that stays in an area throughout the year or most of the year whose adult population moves outside the area to breed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> birds throughout the year and is home to 112 species of birds, including 49 species of waterbirds.\u00a0 The lake\u00a0is also a major stopover and wintering ground for 17 species of winter migrant<\/span><\/span><\/span>A species that spends its non-breeding winter months in the area.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> birds.\u00a0 It appears that avian diversity and numbers are at their highest from February to April during the northward migration of birds in spring.<\/p>\n

Bird-friendly wetlands<\/h2>\n

Waterbirds\u00a0generally prefer wetlands that maximise the abundance and accessibility of their food and avoid areas with extensive human disturbance.\u00a0 Perur Lake contains a rich diversity of molluscs and fish that provide food for\u00a0waterbirds and is relatively unpolluted.\u00a0 The lake, however, is subject to various habitat encroachments such as road construction and its use by motor vehicles, illegal and unauthorised dumping of waste material, conversion to an artificial reservoir for agricultural use, and the establishment of hutments.\u00a0 These human activities impair the functionality of the wetland, as seen from the reduced number and diversity of birds during the road construction period in the lake.<\/p>\n

The study also suggested that the\u00a0presence or absence of water and its levels in the lake is a key determining\u00a0factor of the avian species composition.\u00a0 Meeting the needs of all birds by maintaining adequate water levels in the wetland during the critical months of February\u2013May can also be beneficial for local communities as it allows more time and opportunity for groundwater recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u25ba Adequate water levels must be maintained in wetlands during the crucial months of February\u2013May for the benefit of all birds, especially migrating\u00a0waterbirds.<\/p>\n

\u25ba Similar studies need to be conducted in some of the adjoining wetlands of the area in a synchronous<\/span><\/span><\/span>Occuring at the same time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> manner for better understanding and substantiating the possible avian patterns.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
